Paracetamol is a very widely used painkiller and fever-reducer, effective at managing mild to moderate pain.

The medication is widely-regarded as safe if taken properly, and in most parts of the world a prescription is not required to buy paracetamol. It is also commonly found in combination with other pain-reducing agents, such as ibuprofen or caffeine. Managing Pain with Paracetamol

Paracetamol is effective in reducing pain from a number of sources:

• Headache
• Muscle aches
• Backache
• Toothache
• Aches from colds

It will also reduce fever and associated symptoms. The medication may help with mild arthritis pain, but because it has very weak anti-inflammatory properties it is not an ideal treatment.

Administration is simple in adults:

• Take 1 to 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours as needed.
• The medication is most effective if taken at the earliest symptoms of pain.
• Adults usually take 500 mg in each dose.
• Do not exceed 1000 mg in a single dose.
• Do not exceed 4000 mg in a 24 hour period.
• Taking with food may ease side effects of nausea or stomach pain.
• It is generally advised to not take paracetamol for more than 10 consecutive days, as chronic long-term use increases risk of adverse effects, such as liver damage.

Though considered safe in children and even infants over 2 months old, doses are smaller and based on weight; this should be calculated by a doctor. Children should not use the product more than 5 days in a row; if pain or fever is still present, seek medical attention.

Effects are noticeable 10 to 30 minutes after tablets are taken. Wait at least 4 hours before taking a second dose.

Before you Buy Paracetamol

Though considered a safe medication, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure treatment is trouble-free:

• It's very important to not exceed 1000 mg in a dose or 4000 mg in 24 hours; too much of this medication can cause serious liver damage.
• Note that a great many other medications, including those of the over-the-counter variety, contain paracetamol; read labels carefully to prevent overdose. It is particularly common in medications that treat cold or flu symptoms.
• If large amounts of paracetamol are consumed, seek emergency medical attention even if there are no negative symptoms; large doses can cause potentially fatal liver damage.
• Patients with preexisting problems of the liver or kidneys should not buy paracetamol without first discussing risks with a doctor. Patients with a history of alcoholism may need liver tests performed before use.
• If taking other medications, even non-prescription, there is a chance of reduced effectiveness or interactions. Check with a pharmacist or doctor if unsure.

The medication is not effective for everyone; if it's not working well, it's worth exploring other options.

Adverse Effects

When used properly, side effects are very rare and typically involve stomach upset, such as nausea or mild discomfort. These effects may be alleviated by eating when tablets are taken. Very rarely more serious side effects are encountered:

• Skin rash, with or without itching
• Hypotension (low blood pressure)
• Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes; indicates liver damage)

If the above side effects are experienced, stop treatment until a doctor is consulted.
